I explore how microbial life, and signs of its past existence, might survive the bombardment of cosmic radiation on the surface of Mars, and what are the best ways to try and detect it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">After graduating from the University of Oxford in 2002 with a first class degree in Biological Sciences, I moved to\u00a0University College London\u00a0for a\u00a0four year combined MRes-PhD programme at\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 24px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/CoMPLEX\/\" target=\"blank\">CoMPLEX<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">. \u00a0I was awarded my doctorate\u00a0in 2007: my thesis has since been reprinted by academic publishers under the alluring title of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 24px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Martian-Death-Rays-experimental-astrobiological\/dp\/383834300X\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1275267724&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"blank\">Martian Death Rays<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have also\u00a0held an STFC Science in Society Fellowship, and often deliver public lectures and live events at schools, and literary and science festivals.
